Police Chases make great television:
but we need to shorten the post-capture delay.
A typical scene after the completion of a police chase: The defendant
sits in a police car on the side-lane of the highway. Two to four police
cars have not been parked neatly on the sidelane put jut out into the right
lane. An officer is leaning on his car while filling out a form. Two others
are discussion the event with each other. The suspects car is also already
standing at roadside. While all of this is going on, the right lane is blocked
of with traffic cones, to protect the officers. The sudden removal of one
lane causes a traffic delay which will travel up to a mile or more backwards.
What could be improved ? Procedure standardization toward rapid photography
and departure from the scene. As soon as the suspect is caught, the vehicles
involved should be photographed, followed by an immediate departure of all
police from the scene with the defendants. No lingering.
In a recent incident, four lanes in LA were closed for multiple
hours because of a standoff, which is only ended when SWAT vehicles arrive.
Policecars need to have teargas grendades which can be attached to shotguns,
if they guy points guns all bets are off, four lane highways are not a
place for negotiations. 10,000 children wait in vain for their parents,
contractors lose their appointments and business. We should try to save
someone who does not want to live, but not under such costs.
